THE HONG KONG TOY COLLECTING MARKET

Hong Kong’s position in the global toy collecting market is rooted in its manufacturing past but shaped by how that system has evolved.

In the late 20th century, the city was one of the world’s largest toy exporters, supported by a strong base of factories, skilled workers and international buyers.

When production moved to mainland China in the 1990s, many Hong Kong companies shifted their roles rather than leaving the industry, focusing on design, licensing and quality control while outsourcing large-scale manufacturing across the border.

This transition allowed Hong Kong firms to move into the high-end collectibles market, where value depends on detail, branding and limited production rather than volume.

Companies such as Hot Toys and Threezero produce highly detailed figures based on film and gaming franchises, with design and management handled in Hong Kong and manufacturing carried out in mainland China.

These products are sold globally at premium prices, helping sustain the city’s relevance in toy exports despite the decline of local factory production.

Hong Kong’s free port status plays a key role. With low tariffs and efficient logistics, the city acts as a distribution hub for collectibles moving between mainland factories and overseas markets like the US, Europe, and Japan.

This allows companies to manage international shipping and re-exports quickly, which is important in a market driven by limited releases and fast demand.

Hong Kong has a dense network of specialty stores, hobby shops, and conventions focused on figures, model kits, and designer toys.

While resale platforms like Carousell are not unique to Hong Kong, the city’s concentration of serious collectors and high-value items creates an unusually active secondary market, where limited releases are frequently traded at significant markups.

Together, these factors—design expertise from its manufacturing history, a key logistics role, and a strong collector base—make Hong Kong an influential hub in the global toy collecting market, not just a relic of its past.

Local Demand Reinforces this Ecosystem
